The Web Design and Development Diploma Program at Edison College offers a comprehensive web design diploma that combines creative design with technical expertise. Through hands-on website development classes, students learn how to plan, design, build, and maintain modern websites. The website development course covers essential areas such as visual design principles, responsive layouts, web publishing, front-end and back-end development, and database management. Graduates gain the confidence to create professional, user-friendly websites that meet current industry standards.

As part of this web designer course, students develop strong coding skills using industry-relevant technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP for WordPress, and Bootstrap. These tools are used to build website structures, create interactive features, and manage server-side databases, providing a solid foundation for careers in web and digital development.

Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of fundamental web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
  • Gain proficiency in HTML for structuring web content, CSS for styling and layout, and JavaScript for creating dynamic, interactive web pages and handling user interactions.
  • Learn how to deploy CMS and framework-based websites to production environments, using hosting platforms and cloud services.
  • Understand the core principles of web design and development using WordPress and Bootstrap to create responsive, visually appealing websites.
  • Understand basic web security principles, including encryption, authentication, and protection against common web vulnerabilities.
  • Create and maintain websites and web applications, focusing on both front-end and back-end development to ensure functionality and user experience.

Admission Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent or mature student status (19 years or older prior to starting the program).

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • Minimum Grade 10 English plus a minimum of three years of full-time secondary education (Grades 8–12) completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages, or
  • The overall minimum scores required are: IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5, TOEFL score of 46 (only TOEFL iBT is accepted), CAEL score of 40, CELPIP scores of listening 6, reading 5, writing 5, and speaking 6, or an overall minimum Duolingo English Test (DET) score of 95.

The Accuplacer assessment may be accepted only under the following conditions:

  • The applicant is 19 years or older at the start of the program and is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who cannot access their educational records or provide sufficient evidence of secondary or post-secondary education as outlined above.
  • The applicant provides attestation that they have completed at least three years of full-time instruction in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages, and the applicant completes an Accuplacer English Assessment (Next Generation: reading, writing, and WritePlacer) and achieves the following minimum scores for reading: 230 writing: 230 WritePlacer: 4.
