Program Description

The Medical Laboratory Assistant Diploma Program provides both a theoretical foundation and a practical skill set. This in-demand and career-focused program includes courses on medical terminology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, ECG, and phlebotomy training for the application of current medical laboratory procedures.

This Medical Lab Assistant Program prepares graduates to work as Medical Laboratory Assistants at a medical laboratory within a variety of institutions, both in public (hospitals) or private settings (such as LifeLabs, etc.). The duration of this diploma program is 36 weeks, including a 6-week practicum at a Lifelabs Clinic. The graduates are prepared to meet the competency requirements and are qualified to register with BCSLS after program completion.

LifeLabs and Edison College have entered into a unique partnership to help students from the coastal communities study, train, and work in their communities. This Medical Lab Assistant Course is accredited and designated by PTIB Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills as well as recognized and affiliated with BCSLS and LifeLabs, who will provide a 6-week practicum at their clinics.

Program Objectives

Medical laboratory assistants work in laboratories and handle patients’ blood and other body fluid samples for different kinds of tests. This program prepares students to not only work in high-end laboratories but also excel in their careers.

Upon completion of this Medical Laboratory Assistant Program BC, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

• Work in an ethical and safe manner as a medical laboratory assistant, interacting with coworkers and members of the public.
• Provide professional medical laboratory services, efficiently and effectively use medical laboratory equipment, etc.
• Perform a variety of blood collection methods, using proper techniques and standard precautions.
• Collect, handle, and process specimens for analysis, following accepted standards and procedures for the operation of medical laboratories, and perform cardiac monitoring tests, properly recording the results.
• Fulfill administrative requirements and perform related tasks.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent OR mature student status (19 years or older prior to starting the program)
  • Meet one of the following English Language Proficiency requirements:
    • Minimum Grade 12 English (Domestic Students)
    • Overall IELTS 6.0, CLB Level 7, Duolingo score of 95-100, or ECC test score of 67/100
  • Keyboarding skills of 40 wpm
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Documented proof of Vaccinations
